Hot Staging Troubles: What Really Happened To Booster 9?
Keep exploring at brilliant.org/CSIStarbase/
Get started for free, the first 200 people get 20% off an annual premium subscription.
In this episode we will examine the critical design considerations that had to be addressed to allow Starship to execute its hot stage maneuver without destroying both vehicles in the process! At the end you will hopefully gain an appreciation for the amount of work that went into being able to pull this off in a ridiculously short timeline.
After covering the upgrades that needed to be made for this to be successful, we will get deeper into the physics of hot staging. This isn't a unique mode of stage separation but the way it is executed is unlike any other rocket that has done this.
Lastly, we will address all of the speculative explanations about what caused Booster 9 to explode shortly after stage separation. The goal is not to come to a definite conclusion, but get a visual understanding of each theory, and then determine which ones actually seem feasible to the real cause of failure.

This looks pretty dramatic but remember spacex is trying to find the bare mimimum. If nasa were building this it would cost 10x as much and take up 100x the area. Think 39a (built for saturn V) but 2.5 times bigger.

Hey, would you use your fame and starpower to set up a skydiver with a clear lexan tube about 5% full of liquid and jump out of a plane maybe 10,000 feet up and train cameras on the fluid? This might give some insight into the problems faced in relighting the engines on starship.

It seems that propellant/oxydizer tanks which are static and allow he liquid to freely move around is simply a design error that should be fixed. If a container for these liquids could be designed that shrinks in volume at the same rate as the volume of liquid is decreasing, keeping the liquid pressure constant, this would eliminate the problem. One way of doing that would be to inflate an elastic bag filled with inert gas (helium for instance) to compensate for th amount of liquid consumed from the tank.

Only about half-way through this because is has so much detail and excellent information and watching after IFT-3. Could the Hot Stage ring been damaged and affected the booster grid fins/electronics? Might it help if an ablative shield or TPS tiles were placed at least on some of the dome? Thank you again for an amazing job on this video. Really well done.

Every launch has more success than the previous one and all the while they are gathering data. Loss of data is by far the most serious failure because it loses the detail that defines the problem and the solution. It's called DOE for Deign Of Experiments. Every attempt is an experiment which yields more data and more solutions.

So, assuming both fuels remain liquid, why don't these tanks have baffles in them to keep the fuel from moving around inside the tanks? More to the point, if they're worried about the fuel rapidly moving to the opposite end of the tank, why don't they have something like a disc that will travel down the tanks as the fuel is consumed to minimize the amount of empty space that the fuel has to move around in? Either that or install a bladder that will compress as the fuel leaves the tank. Either would be a good option to keep this from happening again on future launches. I'm sure they'll figure that out eventually.

They don’t have SpaceX engineers running for the hills over nothing they already said the staging wasn’t the problem. They found the problem like a week ago and posted it up to multiple sources so you need to update your video. It’s not the staging. It was not the thrust that caused the problem, but if you actually listen to SpaceX engineers and SpaceX channels, you would know this
